The average calculator takes in numbers separated by a space or delimiter, then provides analytics about the number set including the average. The arithmetic mean or average is the single value that represents the typical value in a given set of numbers. The average may not actually be one of the numbers within the dataset. For instance, the average of 2 and 100 is 51.
How to Calculate Average
The average or mean of a dataset of numbers is equal to the sum of the numbers divided by the total amount of numbers used to make up the sum:
Avg = ( n1 +
n2 + n3 )
/ 3
Calculating Average Example
This semester in ECON 101, you have the following assignments that are all weighted equally to calculate the mean grade.
- 3 Homework assignments with scores of 100, 86, and 77.
- 3 Exams with scores of 81, 90, and 72.
- 1 Final Exam and you score 89
ECON 101 average = (100 + 86 + 77 + 81 + 90 + 72 + 89) / 7 = 85
