Use the Percentage Calculator to calculate any percent of a number or find the percent of one known number (numerator) over another known number (denominator) as a friendly displayed percentage.

Percentages of numbers in any context go hand in hand with data analytics. Use this free percentage calculator as an extension of the DeeboData workspace.

Find percentages of numbers using two common inquiries we will detail below.

How we Calculate the Percentage of a Number

  • • Percent means a value measured as a part of or divided by 100. We only handle 0 or positive numbers.
  • • Break the word down "Per" "cent" like "cent"ury means 100 years. So Per 100.
  • • We use the cross multiply and divide procedure
  • • Starting from the commonly formatted percentage we see daily i.e. 40% of a number. We will do 40% of 28 for this example.
  • • Divide the percent number (40) by 100
  • • In your mind's eye or on a sheet of paper or computer do this:

    40 X
      ------ = ------
    100 28

  • So of course we want to find X now, so let's do it. Remember cross multiply and divide. That's why we set it up visually this way.
  • 1. Cross multiply: Start from the top left (the percent number or numerator in this context) and multiply it by the denominator of the fraction across or on the other side. 40 x 28 = 1,120
  • 2. Divide: Now take that 1,120 and say that unknown X = 1,120 / 100 = 11.2
  • And that's it! 40% of 28 is 11.2
  • Data visualization and transformation of data into valuable knowledge is DeeboData's goal.
  • • We skipped simplification of fractions for your time's sake, but just understand that 2/5, 4/10, 8/20, and essentially infinity other equivalent fractions also equal 40/100, but you'd best sub in 2/5. In which case it is likely easier to mentally perform 2*28 = 56, then divide 56/5 to safely arrive at approximately 11 even if you're still improving on fractions.

What is One Value out of Another Value as Percentage

  • This inquiry takes less steps, even though cm&d can be used
  • We just take the first number and divide it by the final known number you want the percentage of
  • It's also good to simplify fractions here to lessen the amount of resources you may need in the future to find a number out of a number.
  • E.g. What is 45 out 75 as a percentage?
  • Simplify 45/75 by dividing both numbers by their greatest common factor (15). The greatest common factor is the number that will divide evenly into both numbers of interest (45 and 75) i.e. the answers to 45/15 and 75/15 are integers.
  • So 45/75 = 3/5 = 0.6
  • Multiply the resulting decimal by 100 since we're after percent and we want to display it in the common format: 0.6 x 100 = 60%
